Last summer, I decided I wanted to try to paint again. Designing & creating digitally has been my primary way of creating for a while now, and except for the post-it’s I designed last spring, I really didn’t explore working with paints and brushes.
As I was experimenting with blending colors and learning how to handle paint brushes again, I ended up creating this piece. (Currently the original is with my cousin and his wife – it was their super nerdy yet tasteful Christmas gift). It has one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite shows.
And right now, it just fits.
Because there is more to life than working. There is more to life than just going through the motions. Your challenges aren’t there for your defeat. Your pain will not crush you. You have to write your story. Do you want it to be about the girl who spent the entire day in bed on Saturday watching a Doctor Who marathon, for the 12th weekend in a row? No. And even if getting out of bed is a physical impossibility, there is more to the world than dinosaurs on space ships…on a screen.
(as cool as that is).
Your story can be so much more than being a bump on a log. Because you are so much more than a bump on a log. (Never forget, there is nothing boring about you.) You have interests and hopes and dreams. You do cool things. You have people who love you. You are a story. Just remember, you can always add to your highlight reel.
Recently, after an emphatic refusal to clear me to take Irish dance classes, my doctor suggested ballet…and dancing has become a rekindled love. I started brunching. (Sure, all the cool kids do it, but they do it because there is nothing better than a lazy meal at whatever time you could round up a group of friends). I go to museums and lectures and late-night shows (that may or may not make any sense). I travel.
It’s all about doing something. Anything really. Well, anything where you are learning, sharing or growing.
So remember. “We’re all stories in the end, so make it a good one, eh?”
